W.S.Merwin’s poem at Memorial

At this link you can read text from the memorial in Tucson last week. It is a transcription from a CNN program that includes– among other really touching, even amusing, and sincere comments by the journalists covering the Shootings and the principles in the memorial– the entire text by Native American Yaqui, DR. CARLOS GONZALES who wrote an incredibly beautiful blessing to read. It begins thus and by clicking on the link above you can read the entire text, which is quite long, and well worth the time it takes:
“Oh, Creator, let us not forget our fellow creatures. Those that stand. Those that blow in the wind. Those that are tall and stately. Those that crawl on the earth. Those that slither on the earth. Those that live under the earth.
Let us remember and bless the winged ones. Those that swim in the waters. The four legged. And also our brothers, the two leggeds that walk throughout this world. When we all come together at this time. And may the words people hear here sink in to their hearts so that they too can heal. So that they too can feel better… .”
Also, a poem by our national poet laureate, W.S. Merwin was read at the memorial. Bill Merwin is one of the most gentle and genuinely contemplative of all the poets I was blessed to know and to study with at Naropa many years ago. His poem may be the one good thing to be written down in the history of the Tuscon Shootings, when all is said an done. It is here:
To the New Year
With what stillness at last
you appear in the valley
your first sunlight reaching down
to touch the tips of a few
high leaves that do not stir
as though they had not noticed
and did not know you at all
then the voice of a dove calls
from far away in itself
to the hush of the morning

so this is the sound of you
here and now whether or not
anyone hears it this is
where we have come with our age
our knowledge such as it is
and our hopes such as they are
invisible before us
untouched and still possible

—W.S. Merwin, from Present Company

About SimoneLazzeriEllis

Hello, I am a person in the after post modern world; a poet, author, film maker, & arts journalist by trade. I'm broke. I guess I'm a story teller and observer. The stories are all true, the reviews my best educated guess or rants in the middle of the night or behind a pony wall in a news room. You may disagree with what I say vehemently or not give a shit, or hey maybe awaken me anew with your Imagination and change boh our future-- yeah, I'd dig that-- .
